I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.
Psalm 57:9-11 (NIV)

What kind of legacy do you want to leave?

Tonight I had my music on shuffle as I was working on lesson plans when Nichole Nordeman's "Legacy" (Woven and Spun, 2002) came on.  It's been years since I have heard this song, but the lyrics really struck me.  She sings about her desire to make a mark on the world, not by winning awards or gaining status, but by living a life completely sold out for Jesus. I love the line from the song that says, "I want to leave an offering / A child of mercy and grace who blessed Your name unapologetically / And leave that kind of legacy". Take a few minutes to read through the lyrics and think about this:

What kind of legacy do you want to leave?

Here is the music video so you can listen along as you read the lyrics.

"Legacy" by Nichole Nordeman

I don't mind if you've got something nice to say about me
And I enjoy an accolade like the rest
You could take my picture and hang it in a gallery
Of all the who's who and so-n-so's that used to be the best
At such 'n such...it wouldn't matter much

I won't lie, it feels alright to see your name in lights
We all need an "Atta boy" or "Atta girl"
But in the end I'd like to hang my hat on more besides
the temporary trappings of this world

Chorus:
I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough to make a mark on things?
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy

I don't have to look too far or too long awhile
To make a lengthy list of all that I enjoy
It's an accumulating trinket and a treasure pile
Where moth and rust, thieves and such will soon destroy

Chorus

Not well traveled, not well read, not well-to-do or well bred
Just want to hear instead, "Well done" good and faithful one

Chorus

  1. I was flipping through my Ipod a few weeks ago and came across this song too. It definitely makes you sit down and think about what you want most in life.
